Ductless Mini-Split Problems We See in Shoreline
Single-zone systems pair one outdoor unit with one indoor cassette. The most common Shoreline retrofit for adding AC to a single main living area or master bedroom. Multi-zone systems pair one outdoor unit with two to eight indoor cassettes distributed through the home. Wall-mount cassettes are the standard indoor unit type; we also service ceiling-cassette (recessed), floor-mount (concealed under a bench or in a knee wall), horizontal ducted (a small ducted unit hidden in a ceiling or attic space), and one-way blow ceiling cassettes. Concealed ducted mini-splits sometimes serve as whole-house replacements for centralized ductwork. Cold-climate (hyper-heat) variants operate down to 5°F and below with full capacity, common on newer Shoreline installs since 2018. Older single-zone units from the 2010s built for cooling-primary applications typically need heater-strip supplement in cold weather or hyper-heat upgrade when the compressor eventually fails and replacement time comes.

Also common: Gree, Panasonic, Samsung, Sanyo, and older Sanyo and Frigidaire ductless units. Parts channel access for manufacturer-specific control boards, sensors, and specialty electronics.
Ductless repair takes specific expertise. Mini-splits use inverter-driven variable-speed compressors with sophisticated electronics that don’t diagnose the same way as traditional single-speed HVAC. Standard resistance-check diagnostics don’t apply to inverter systems. Residential HVAC techs without mini-split training routinely misdiagnose these systems.
Refrigerant work on mini-splits requires EPA 608 certification and proper tools. Small refrigerant charges (typical ductless charge is only 2 to 5 pounds) mean small errors have large effects. We measure charge accurately, adjust as needed, and document commissioning parameters.
